Walk Towards a Fitter, Healthier You!

The Brisk Walking Club (BWC) Survey 2005 was conducted recently to establish the physical and social benefits of brisk walking amongst residents. A sample size of 800 walkers responded to the survey.

The Respondents
The 800 respondents were made up of the following demographics:
73% Females
87% Chinese
48% Senior Citizens aged 55 years and above
Frequency and Duration of Walks
Just how often do residents brisk walk?
44% brisk walk more than 3 times a month
75% spend at least 30 to 45 minutes on each walk
Benefits of Brisk Walking

The majority of respondents agreed that brisk walking was beneficial to their health:
93% indicated that their health improved after joining the BWCs
56% successfully lost weight from brisk walking
59% felt more energetic
24% felt more relaxed

Pull Factors

Exercise is not the only reason why residents join Brisk Walking Clubs:
63% joined the BWC because they wanted to exercise
21% took it as an opportunity to make new friends

Peripheral Benefits

The level of bonding among family members and friends appears to be high:
31% brisk walked with family members
41% brisk walked with friends
Our brisk walkers have proven to be self-motivated individuals. Only 16% felt that the gift redemption scheme was an important factor for their participation in BWCs.

Conclusion:
The overall reception to the North West CDC BWC programme has been encouraging. 99% of respondents has indicated a high level of satisfaction with the programme. And with the recent formation of the 100th Brisk Walking Club on 3 July 2005, residents can literally walk to more good times ahead!
